Ugly EF Johnson Viking II Ham Radio transmitter Modulation Test Stancor Hammond transformer Part 3

The Ugly Viking is finally complete. Modulation section is repaired and working. So, then I thought, how about we compare the stock Stancor interstage transformer audio vrs modified Hammond 124B . Take a listen. The Hammond is an audio grade transformer used in high end home amplifier applications, Freq response is typical 20-20K, where as the Johnson communications grade interstage targeted the human voice range, intended for efficient transmission on the Ham radio bands.. Therefore, there is a big difference in response. The Hammond is still a great choice if your looking to broaden your signal. However a processor might be another good investment. Great to hear the old Viking sing again!

I love the sound after changing to the Hammond.
If I owned that Johnson I would leave it looking ugly.

Thanks for that great, never before heard, comparison of the Hammond vs. stock transformer. I am an old AM broadcaster from my younger days and I appreciate a full spectrum sound but for my Viking II, after hearing your comparison, I will continue to enjoy the stock transformer. I love every minute of your videos, especially the Viking II shows. I wish I could send you mine for a PTT install and some help with low or sometime no grid drive. -- KA4CID Richmond Hill, GA

Is this Hammond the same company that made the old Hammond organs?

I'm guessing that both transformers have the same turns-ratio but the audio transformer has larger wire?

What causes the low frequency hum in the audio when transmitting?

Terry I've got a "pretty viking II " but has the same issue... What was the problem you found for no modulation?

Have a question, I have an old swan cygnet 260 single side band, I just got, I noticed when I transmit it has the power output but only transmits on am, would the tubes need changed or would this have to do with the two bias adjustments on the back, any info would be greatly appreciated?

Excellent demonstration, obviously for short wave you want to use low fidelity so that at the receiver side of the QSO you can better filter unwanted frequencies I.E. static and adjacent channel interference.
