I have 9 women making on average $47.12 with Var= $53.24 vs.
33 men making $35.11 average, and $487.42 var.

I calculated this to have a test statistic of -2.64

To test to see if men make more that women with alpha=.05 I used:
TDIST(abs(-2.64), ((9+33)-2), 1) which gave me .005787968 which is < .05

Do these numbers really suggest men make more than women despite the average suggesting otherwise? Or am I missing a step? Admittedly men do have a much wider variance.
