Steve Carell to Julie Andrews: 'Congratulations, Mom!'

Steve Carrell pays tribute to his DESPICABLE ME & MINIONS co-star Julie Andrews at the 48th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute on June 9, 2022 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. THE 48TH AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: A TRIBUTE TO JULIE ANDREWS aired on TNT on June 16, 2022.

Other presenters at the event included Carol Burnett, Bo Derek, Héctor Elizondo, Cynthia Erivo, Jane Seymour, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, Brandi Burkhardt and cast members from THE SOUND OF MUSIC – Angela Cartwright, Duane Chase, Nicholas Hammond, Kym Karath and Debbie Turner.

I was 17 when Despicable Me came out just finished my sophomore year of HS. Ok I admit I really thought the idea of a supervillain turned adopted father would be too crazy to work. And it was going to take more than Julie’s star billing to lure me into the theater. It took me almost a year to finally sit down and watch the film. I was surprised by the accent Julie uses as Gru’s mom I almost didn’t recognize her voice. For the most part, I was proven wrong. I’m 31 now and it warms my heart to see Steve honor his onscreen mom in this matter.
