I have a gentleman rooster. He is 5kg and survived 2 fox attacks. He is my first rooster and is so kind to his ladies and us. When I have people visiting they are so surprised by how gentle he takes food. His name is Arnold and I love my gentle giant

had a very large highly aggressive leghorn rooster, after a particularly bad fight with him, he was going to the soup pot. the next day as i went to collect them I found a large dead skunk, it had raided the coop last night and was put down by "the colonel" the act of defending the coop earned him tenure and he mellowed out after that, one of the best roosters I've ever owned.

My friend had a old rooster called Jabber, Jabber used to be a fighting rooster. My friend rescued him and kept him with his other hens, one morning my friend went to go get some eggs from the coop he saw blood everywhere and some feathers, after going in the coop to look he found a dead weasel. Jabber was missing a chunk of skin and feathers from the back of his neck, along with some other small injuries. His battle scars fool folk into thinking he is mean, but he is actually a nice bird.

I had a rooster that was very aggressive at first. He got injured so I had to put him in my chicken hospital in my living room. I had to hand feed him and we became really good friends. When he was reunited with his flock, he was the best rooster I ever had. One of my girls got out so he went out after her to keep her safe. He was taken away by a coyote but the hen survived. I miss him dearly.❤😢

I’ve had so many roosters, but Genghis Khan was our last. So sweet but such a fighter. One day I found five piles of his feathers outside and saw a large fox looking at the hens at a distance. I got them put away and thought he was a goner. that night, there he was trying to get in. I cried tears of relief and tended to his wounds.

Had a bantam rooster with 2 hens. One cold night we got home late, they were still out, when we went to get them out of the ark he had each girl tucked in under his wings keeping them safe and warm, it made we cry a little he was so sweet.

I had a pet rooster when I was 7. He was very protective of me and walked me to school daily, and would fly up to peck the boys who tried to pull my long hair. I love him and miss him everyday. Roosters are amazing!!!

I had the best. Harry, from the time they were chicks, would round up the others as the sun started hanging low, insisting they come to roost. (He was so young g I didn’t even know he was a rooster.) He guarded the flock always. Once they were accidentally blocked from the coop one evening. I found all his girls tucked under a tarp, and that brave little bird was stoically standing at attention about 3 yards away in plain sight. He was nearly frozen and soaked to the bone. He was standing guard, so as to be the first to sound the alarm if there was a predator. He always foraged and called his girls to food. He was gentle with chicks, and many of his hatchlings were successfully brooded by their mama hens under his watchful care. He gave nearly 6 years of his life totally dedicated to his flock, and even as he was getting old, he still foraged and called, still guarded, and trained a younger rooster to do the same. He was the most noble animal I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. In the end, aged and scraggly, he died protecting his flock from a dog. He is laid to rest in our pet cemetery, high atop Whisper Hill. I will not forget him.

My mom's roosters are often bought at auctions as part of of pair. She's mindful of how they act at the auctions. A calm rooster in all the noise and chaos will be a good rooster around kids. Her last rooster turned out to be sterile and had special medical needs, but his friendly personality and gentleness wound up being what she needed for the hens. Sir Percy lived a very happy 12 years and raised many chicks as if they were his own.

I also had a super sweet silky rooster. One day he was carried off by a fox. My son went into the woods to try to retrieve him and found him hiding in a dry creek bed crevice, mostly unharmed.

Had a Brahma-Rhode Island Red mix rooster named Tony. Gigantic guy, would sprint up to me to hold him. Lived for about 6 years, he was a good protector and I miss him

My grandma always has 3 roosters on the farm at any given time, they would all fly over to the guard dogs when there was an issue with predators and would literally perch on your forearm and screech until you pet them.

Loved looking through the comments to see everyone’s wholesome gentleman rooster stories.

Yeesss! Plus a good rooster can lower flock stress as well. I've found one of the best signs of having a good rooster is if they do a little dance when they flirt with the hens.
We had a large cream leghorn rooster that everyone was scared of because he looked super pissed off all the time, but he was actually the sweetest gentleman.

I’ve had flocks where I’ve had roosters that were aggressive, others cowardly, and others gentlemen roosters…and sometimes no rooster. The best flocks were always the ones with the gentlemen rooster.
The best rooster that I ever had died protecting his hens from an owl. He was a very good boy and we all miss him.

we have a gentleman roster, i called him cooper, he brings his wife (we only had 2 at the time) food when she was brooding, he would bring her fresh fruits and while she ate he would prune her and lay with her, when the chicks hatched he became a doting father, hell i watched as he warmed them up by laying next to them and bringing his babies in

I love roosters. They're so entertaining to watch because sometimes they are just pure comedy. 😂

When I was a kid, our rooster was the sweetest little man who went against a dang loose dog for his girls.

Those are some handsome guys! I agree with everything said here. I love how when I throw out treats for my chickens, the rooster will walk over and point to a treat, letting the hens know it is OK to eat. If they still don't take the bait, so to speak he will pick up a treat and drop it in front of the hens. He will not eat until the hens have gotten their share. The whole flock dynamic is amazing to watch and learn! They are not dumb animals. I absolutely LOVE watching them!

Breaking up pecking order scuffles is something that should be talked about more, because arguments between hens can turn bloody and turn into cannibal situations. Roosters are sensitive to ANY commotion and will step in to separate.
