I’m no longer calling it insomnia. I’m now a Medieval sleeper

What you described is my natural sleep schedule. If I try to do anything else, I am not feeling good the day after.

It wasn’t because night was “unsafe” it was because pre lighting night was so long! You went to bed when it got dark and woke up when it got light. That means in the winter night could be 14 hours long depending on where you lived. It was also said that for fertility one should wait to consummate until your “second sleep” for best results. The gap time was also used to check in on and feed livestock during the long nights.

I've been sleeping this way for a few years since retiring. Love it.

My understanding is that people woke up in the middle of the night to tend fires, build them back up.

I am married, but worked out of town for 15 months. I fell into a pattern of eating, watching TV or YouTube in bed, falling asleep at about 9, waking up at midnight - 2am, doing chores and then going to bed again.

I do that same thing. Go to bed around 8. Wake up around 2-3. Then back to bed until daylight.

I already do sleep like this - and never considered it a problem, because it just feels normal to me.

I worked in manufacturing and did all shifts..day shifts that required you to wake up at 4am suck swing shifts that require a person to be in bed shortly after getting off work at 1 or 2 am suck and grave yard shifts that require a person to try and sleep during the daytime hours suck …..my conclusion is that work sucks …

I've always wondered if the mediaeval sleep routine is considered the healthier/more natural option for us or not

As a senior I started sleeping in shifts or and it helped me greatly. So a 2 hr day nap and back down in the evening for a 5 hr sleep. Always had my 7 hrs per 24 hrs sleep. This routine helped very much with chronic fatigue syndrome.. 😊

I have often done this. Thought it was some sort of insomnia.

Animals do this too! Australian magpies have been found to wake up in the middle of the night and chatter a bit with their family/friends, and then go back to sleep

Biphasic sleeping and wearing hats/caps make sense when you think about how cold it must have been and necessary to keep the fire alive

Imagine having to spend hours trying to fall asleep TWICE a day

I sleep this way all the time. I think it’s just how some people are wired.

I used to do this in college. I'd wake up around 11pm and it was the best time to study while everyone else was sleeping and my brain refreshed.
