Star Wars Confirms Obi-Wan Kenobi is a Broken Man

Disney+‘s new Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi is set to arrive late next month, and now the show’s writer Joby Harold has explained the timeline that Ewan McGregor finds himself thrust into. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Harold revealed that the series will take a deep dive into the galaxy post-Order 66, where darkness reigns. “It takes place 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, in a time of darkness in the galaxy,” the creative explained. “The Empire is in the ascendancy. And all the horrors that come with the Empire are being made manifest throughout the galaxy. And the Jedi Order as we know them are being all but wiped out. So everything that was in the prequels has crumbled.”

Harold went on to explain that Obi-Wan’s faith in the Jedi Order gets tested as Vader begins hunting him down. “Those surviving Jedi, those that do survive, are on the run and they’re in hiding. And Vader and his Inquisitors are chasing them to the end of the galaxy,” Harold continued. “Within that hopeless fatalistic world, we find possibly the most famous of all our surviving Jedi in hiding struggling with that faith that defines the Jedi, and wanting to hold onto it and hoping to regain that faith within that sort of hopeless world.”

Before wrapping up, the writer also touched on how Obi-Wan will deal with his past relationship with Anakin Skywalker. “Part of the journey of what he goes through is reconciling that past and coming to understand it and coming to understand his place in it,” Harold concluded. “And that journey and the places he has to go emotionally as well as physically, and some of those battles he has to fight, are very much to do with facing that past and understanding who he was, his part in his own history, in the history of others.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on Disney+ on May 27.

So is Disney's upper management...

From what I remember, he was broken in the first half of the EU Kenobi book (its been a while since I read it). He was only able to snap out of it when there was an injustice on Tatooine that he simply couldn't ignore. I'm not interested in the D+ series because I don't think they'll tell his story as well as the book.

This being Disney, specifically Disney Plus, they will find a way to emasculate, humiliate and make Obi-Wan a secondary character in his own show. They've got a pretty good track record in that. So "broken man" in Disney double-speak means that he will have his hetero-normative, cis-gendered white male privilege checked and be reminded that he is a part of the oppressive patriarchy. As such he also has an unconscious bias and has therefore contributed to the systemic oppression and discrimination of protected groups in the Galaxy. For which he will have to endlessly apologize and express remorse and subservience at any and all opportunity. Nevermind that Joby Harold is a hack writer with a mediocre resume at best in addition to some of the other mediocrities involved with this limited series. My one and only hope for this was Deborah Chow. Seeing that Ewan has kneeled and kissed the House Of Mouse ring, she was the last one I had any confidence in. Deborah Chow is an excellent director. But she cannot create miracles with her hands tied behind her back as well as with soo many talentless hacks and morons, including Dartleen Kennedy, and other nauseating bozos from Lucasfilm and Disney looking over her shoulder. I hope I'm wrong, actually dead wrong about this, happily so, and the miniseries turns out to be great and entertaining! PS Remember what they did to both Luke and Han in the context of "broken man"...

Obi-Wan wasn't broken, he needed to redefine the true meaning the Ways of the Force and I believe Qui-Gon Jinn will open Obi-Wan's eyes about what's the Force it truly is about. I truly hope THAT I'm expecting to the new show. Otherwise if it's too caricature and humiliating the main character then I don't bother to watch. We'll see.

To suggest he doesn’t need help is a rather ridiculous idea. In our darkest times it’s often others who help pull us out of it or give us a new perspective. Very rarely would someone do it on their own

Except he wasn't broken, he had a steadfast faith and mission to look after Luke. He had no time for despair or sadness. Also, his relationship with Anakin was resolved in Episode 3. He put aside his feelings for Anakin. It is as plain as day in the Novel, which is still considered canon. I feel that this just shows that the creative team current has no idea how to handle these characters.

Good Vid, Coach.

You mean to tell me that someone who fought in a war where his own mean betrayed him, had over 90% of his friends die, and had to fight his best friend who had after falling to evil all in only a few hours and is now living alone in the desert is a broken man? Well someone cleaned this toilet really good, because there's no shit.

So what if we’ve never seen a broken down Kenobi? People’s lives have arcs that go up and down. It’s much more realistic to assume he might have PTSD, is struggling, and finds a way out of that pit.

Right now, we have a 19 year gap in his story. Think about all of the things that can happen to a person over two decades, the ups and the downs. If they show an Obi-Wan that is on top of it and always on point, there’s no journey.

I’m glad to see the direction they appear to be going in, because it is far more realistic and human to portray a person who has suffered, becomes disillusioned, and finds a way to regain hope and purpose.

Coach great analysis. Your logic makes great sense. Disney can’t help but hold down the hero’s. I’m thinking the inquisitor will revert back to the good side and save Obi Wan somehow and completely destroy all Star Wars was. I hope I’m wrong.

knowing Disney, broken Kenobi (The Last Jedi treatment) will be for 5 episodes, an the last one where he comes back. I still am not going to watch this show until all the episodes have aired and then only if the reviews are glowing, even then I may not watch it. I'm done with mediocre to down right horrible story telling.
What I am starting to see, since Boba Fett, is fans coming to except mediocre story telling as being hailed as decent to good Star Wars.

I can't wait for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series but I'm getting a little nervous that it's going to be a little disappointing.

We’ve seen a broken Obi wan…

Clone wars breaks him quite a bit. Surely he doesn’t go to the dark side but he’s been broken. Anakin was the last straw that broke him. Qui gon, Satine, Ahsoka, then Anakin.

Happy Easter.
If its only drama about obiwan s dealings with his failure and flashbacks... And hearing Quigon s voice... It could be cool, but my expectations are low

Argh, no hes not. Obi Wan is always able to remain strong and smiling even when times are dire. The trailer just showed him scowling, SO BORING.

Attachment is forbidden. He was broken for a short time when he had to leave his padawan for dead.

He truly believes Anakin is dead and Vader is his true form now.

What I only expect is them (Disney) giving him the respect he deserves, and they don't end up doing what they did with Boba Fett.

I feel we all will be disappointed one way or another. Just like the sequels and the book of boba fett.

With all the characters in Star Wars, here it makes sense to Jake Skywalker him... i don't mind it, as long as the story is GOOD, not average but GOOD, and as long as it isn't filled to the brim with cringe woke tropes and as long as no other characters are around (like Fennec Shand) who steal every single scene where the main character is expected to shine.
That said, i'm not "hyped" for this, i just want Mandalorian Season 3 and maybe Bad Batch Season 2 already, none of that other stuff can be considered an automatic win anymore, after Book of Boba i'm expecting Disney Star Wars to be a constant back and forth between good and bad stuff.
It starts to feel like a too many cooks situation.
