I'm a professional translator and work for phone makers but in a romance language. That's so interesting, didn't realize the UI all got switched around so much in RTL languages.

I don’t understand why they had to also flip the app location? It just seems pointless despite the reading difference.

App developers:
"Arabs are just mirrored humans, right? So I just flip everything?"
"sure, I don't get paid enough to care"

It pissed me off when I first learned that Arabic doesn’t use Arabic numerals

As a left handed person, i feel like Arab would feel nice to write (no pencil stains on my hand)

Switching to Australian turns the whole screen upside down

Yes, it's confusing. I am Arab and I tried to do the same thing for the same reason, but I wanted to learn English because I was somewhat weak in it at the time and I wanted to learn it because we also teach English as a secondary language in school. It was really confusing, and I changed it back to Arabic immediately. Ha ha ha. Excuse me if there are any errors. I'm still weak in the language and use Google Translate. Ha ha ha. But the situation is better than before, thank God. I can speak and understand fairly well, but I still struggle with writing and sometimes reading. Even though the English language is simple, there are things in it that don't make a bit sense to me

As an arab I can't tolerate having my phone in Arabic either 😂

Hi! Fellow Arabic learner here! I have a tip for remembering the numerals!

١ is pretty self explanatory, 1
٢ looks like a two with a long tail when you flip it 90° counterclockwise
٣ is the same way, a three with a long tail
٤ I just have to remind myself four looks like a backwards three lol
٥ same with five, just gotta remind myself it looks like a zero
٦ and with six, lookin’ like a seven
٧ because seVen, it has a V in it
٨ because phonetically, eight and A sound similar
٩ looks like an ole fashioned nine
٠ just a dot, like a 0 shrunk down to almost nothing

As for the time on your lock screen, it’s 22:54! Or 10:54 in the 12 hour format, which is ١٠:٥٤. For me, it’s 11:58, or 23:58 so that’s ١١:٥٨ or ٢٣:٥٨. Hope this helps!

I routinely prank my friends by changing the language, when I discovered how things flipped in Arabic, it became even more entertaining 😂

Fun fact: if you had an android, your adjustment would be way smoother, you could go to developer settings and click "Force RTL Layout", which would let you acclimate to the layout changes in English...

It's deeply funny that "Arabic numerals" and numbers in Arabic are fully different 😂 Some common origins, but based on the name I would really expect them to be the same

For anyone wondering, the time is 22:54, or 10:54 pm.

Even people who only speak arabic and dont speak English have the layout in English. Like, all the phones i bought in egypt were English. And my maids and people i know who only speak arabic also had it in English.

As someone who has Arabic settings I genuinely didn't expect this many people to find it such a mind bending experience

I'm arabic and i switched my phone to English to improve and stuff and it was so confusing at first but after like a year or something it felt so normal and then my arabic strict uncle got zo mad and thought I'm a pick me who's trying to 'act like foreigners' and made me switch it to arabic but everything felt so weird that i switched it back to English without him knowing 😭😭
