One thing this show gets right is how hard it is to deal with severely abused children. These kids are so busy trying to protect what little remains of their egos that they can't calm down and interact with others normally. Then they do something appalling like this and the person they were interested in abandons them, leaving them bitter and even more convinced no one can help them with anything. 

Asuka should never have been moved in with Shinji as they're both too fucked up to handle it. All they did was make things worse for themselves and each other.

Edit: finally saw it and got this video recommend again. I must say it was one of the best psychological deconstructions in fiction ever. Everyone has their problems and they even quote Sigmund Freud multiple times. Love it.
