Training is one thing, but unless someone has experience engaging in actual frontline combat where there is a risk of injury/death from enemy fire, their own self-assessment is just a hunch. War can't be simulated from within the confines of a boot camp. It would be like asking an aspiring boxer with an 0-0 record how they'd perform outside of a sparring session. This is even true for support roles. Pressure can drastically affect how someone behaves.

Knowing how the aim and shoot and throw a grenade doesn't mean you are a soldier, it's the tactics, and knowing how to follow command, professionalism, that's what makes one a capable soldier.

Quality soldiers are born of the spirit: fortitude & passion are becoming of the breed, innate but impossible to impart. Developing these as characteristic response is the training goal. One of a hundred is a naturally excellent soldier in all aspects while 99 can be uniformed & ten fall in love with conflict.
