Eric Stewart, the writer and singer of this song explained this about the

"At that time my wife and I had been married about eight years, " Eric Stewart recalls, "and she asked me 'Why don't you say "I love you" more often?' I had this crazy idea in my mind that repeating those words would somehow degrade the meaning, so I told her 'Well, if I say every day "I love you, darling, I love you, blah, blah, blah, " it's not gonna mean anything eventually.' That statement led me to try to figure out another way of saying it, and the result was that I chose to say 'I'm not in love with you, ' while subtly giving all the reasons throughout the song why I could never let go of this relationship.
Eric and his wife Gloria are still married after more than 50 years( but I don't think it'll last, "It's just a silly phase he's going through.")
P.S. The girl who whispers " Big Boys Don't Cry." was their secretary in the recording studio and they realised that her voice was perfect for those spoken words.

10cc are a great English rock band from the 70's. This group was super talented as every member was a multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer & producer. "I'm Not In Love" was their biggest hit in 1975 but they had other songs such as "The Things We Do For Love", "Rubber Bullets", "Dreadlock Holiday", "The Dean & I", "The Wall Street Shuffle", "Silly Love", "Life Is A Minestrone", "Art For Art's Sake", "I'm Mandy, Fly Me" etc.

10cc are an incredibly intelligent band that straddle rock and pop. They are very talented Musicians and Writers their albums are brilliant! A great live band!

The band members spent a couple of weeks in the studio singing different chords in harmony, which were then used to provide the layered vocals you hear in the background. No, that wasn't synthesizer, it was human voices harmonizing. And it was all recorded, engineered and mastered on analog tape, before the digital age. Amazing production.

10CC were huge huge HUGE in Britain in the 70’s with a string of massive hits, all very inventive and catchy as all hell.

Hi, Girls! This song was such a monster smash back in the day, that the BBC did a documentary on it entitled " The Making Of I'm Not In Love By 10cc"! Please pull that up, then you'll really appreciate the love that was poured into this song!
God Bless!

The background "music" in this song is not strings, horns, or woodwinds, it is each band member singing "ahhh" too every note in the song, then multiplied dozens of times to achieve over 600 vocals that sound like background music.

10cc were a British group who had major success in the 1970's. "I'm Not In Love" was their biggest hit which went to #2 on the pop charts. Excellent song. Their other top 10 hit that you will also enjoy is "The Things We Do For Love".

Written by band members Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, Stewart came up with the idea for the song after his wife of eight years asked him why he didn't say "I love you" more often.

It's a great song. They got the admin worker at the recording studio to say the "big boys don't cry" line.

10cc are very underrated and tended to fly under the radar for most people despite most people knowing at least one of their song but not knowing who sang it.

Great choice! Simply a crowning achievement in the 70's soft rock genre. It's aged beautifully.

It truly is a love song. Straight up 100%, no strings attached except for sarcasm. He's not denying his love for her nor is he trying to deny it. He's simply being sarcastically funny in professing how deep his love is for her, because his girl knows and loves his sarcastic wit. 🙂

10cc was very popular in the seventies. "The Things We Do For Love' was a staple on the radio from the mid through the late seventies.

I remember this song so very well from my sophomore year in high school. And yes, it does bring back memories. They achieved the background voices by recording multiple layers of voices on top of each other. Enya did this frequently later on with many of her songs. When they needed a female voice to say, “Big boys don’t cry, ” they got an admin in the office of the studio by the name of Cathy to record that part. Yes, he puts her picture over a stain in the wall when he knows he could very well put a picture of a giraffe or a moose there.😁

I went to see them live in concert in 1975 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Hopefully I will see them again for the 50 year tour later this year!! Happy Days!
