The book of Hosea is the twenty-eighth book of the Old Testament. The Hebrew Bible has three sections: the Law, Prophets, and Writings. The Law contains the first five books of the Old Testament. The Prophets is made up of eight books, divided into the Former Prophets and the Latter Prophets. The Latter Prophets include Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Twelve Minor prophets. The Writings consist of religious poetry and wisdom literature. Hosea is part of the Twelve Minor Prophets section of the Old Testament. Now, when I say a book is considered a minor prophet, I am not referring to its importance, but to its length. In other words, the twelve books called the minor prophets are shorter than the major prophets. Hosea’s name means salvation. God wants Hosea to display the nature of God’s salvation for his people. And the way God will display his salvation through Hosea is with a word that is repeated in this book: chesed. This Hebrew word comes in Hosea 2, 4, 6, 10, and 12. And this word has the idea of loyal love. To display his loyalty, God wants Hosea to marry a “wife of whoredom.” What? How does this make sense?

1st commenter, yay 😁. Man, I really like your breakdowns and I agree with your understanding of the text. You gotta watch out for all these interpretations because they will lead you away from God's real message. When you mentioned Elijah and Isaiah and what they did it reminded me of the style of wisdom Solomon displayed with the 2 harlots, the baby, and the sword. God is awesome and wise beyond comprehension for us humans. Anyway, keep it up. Shalom, from your friend Matt in OKC.
