This video could be A LOT shorter, however, I found it very beneficial. Thanks DrZzs

Doc - the VB install was great and something I've been looking for a long time now. All of the other tutorials were either too high level or too basic - this one nailed it! Please consider doing a follow up at some point covering things like USB config though - the one thing holding me back from doing this is not knowing how to set up and configure (in both VB and HASS) my Aeotec ZWave Stick! That would complete the only missing piece in the tutorial.

(BTW, I get a real kick out of seeing your HA Dashboard all the time as I was the person who created the original four themes for it and helped develop the theming engine features. When I see you using my theme, it really feels awesome knowing that you liked it!) Love the live streams and vids - keep up the excellent work.

I was just watching this again out of curiosity. I knwo Virtual Box has its place, but it makes ProxMox like so much easier :)

Note that the versions of VBox and the extensions pack are outdated, so you should download the latest versions from the Virtualbox site but otherwise the docs still work. Hope this helps someone!

After several years of using Pi's to run my home automation I finally broke down to try this out. Totally blown away by the difference it makes when updating and restarting HASSIO. Just a heads up to anyone who may venture trying this and that is make sure you have the Intel Virtual Technology turned on in your BIOS if you run into an issue where you are only getting 32 bit OS options only. Once you turn that on and restart you should be able to get the 64 bit as well.

this method still works, but due to updates to oracle some of the sub menu buttons are moved around. for ex. like the promiscuous option; look for the advanced options button at the bottom of the page.

Hey Dr Zzs. Just got around to the stream.

I think the guys may have scared you a little unnecessarily. So you are running Hassio, the DuckDns add on includes Let’s Encrypt so you should be good already. The way to tell is if when you go to your home assistant website login page from outside your house and it’s a https url instead of http then you are already all good.

Closing all ports except vpn is of course more secure but that’s a risk versus convenience decision.

i Know this is a very basic question but my current knowledge of Linux etc is very limited but I managed to do everything you went thru in this video but once I came to the end and time to load Hass etc the Linux screen came up and said (and not 100% quote but something trying to load with Autoloader: 1: automatic 2: sata 0 3: sata 1 and 4: (not sure now at work and not home). I have tried several things to no avail! What response does it want to begin loading Hassio etal. once I get past this Autoloader question? thanks for your help. Maybe I need to clear things out and begin again but it went pretty much exactly as you showed and well lets just say I need a "WIN" here.

Thanks,
MER

So my question as a noob at this is: Why are we downloading and then converting a VMDK file? I just downloaded the VDI file directly from GitHub and tried that. It seems to work fine. Am I missing something here?

Great video. When i go back into virtual media manager to increase the virtual size there is no slider. I am running virtual box on my NAS if this makes a difference

Just so you know, a lot of hackers look for known things like HASS ports and stuff. It's a way in to your entire network, not just the HASS instance. The right software can hack the entire network via the HASS Port

I like the idea of a VM to have more power for Home Assistant, but I have to say that I do prefer Home Assistant on it's own, dedicated machine. My Home Assistant runs all my lights with central control as well as other items. If the PC crashes or freezes or needs to reboot because another program crashes, I don't want my house offline. Another reason I prefer to run my HASS on a Linux based system rather than Windows :).
Just on docker, the VM Image is running Docker image within the VM. :)

Thanks for doing this DrZzs, I'm running into a bit of a problem though. I have followed this video to install Hassio on my Mac mini, I was previously running HA on the direct terminal in MacOS and I was just having one heck of a frustrating time. So far the Hassio installation has been mostly a breeze! However, when my virtual machine turns on, it will get to a stopping point where it wont load Hassio until I type in "root." Have you or anyone else that might happen across this run into this before? I'm pretty far in my setup but I probably need to step back and correct this first. I'm trying to get the machine to start up after a power outage, load VBox and start the virtual machine. I feel like I need to work on this "root" issue first.

I reached a point with setting static IP and reboot. But after that, I can't reach the http/hass*:8123 on the browser. Also, while booting I got an error for 'failed to start openvmtool or something. What the solution?

Is there a reason why the link to the actual instructions isn't posted here for download?
