Making a scientific breakthrough in 2021 requires more than just a microscope – most scientists rely on powerful computers and ingenious software to carry out their research. Join Dr. James Catmore on Thursday 6th May at 8pm CEST for a public talk on the advanced computing and software techniques used by the ATLAS Experiment at CERN. 

Dr. Catmore will explain how software can be used to reconstruct and analyse billions of particle collisions, and describe how researchers around the world interact with computing in their daily work. He will also look ahead to the “High Luminosity” phase of the Large Hadron Collider starting in the late 2020s, and explore the formidable challenges that it poses for computing and software.

Dr. Catmore is an experimental particle physicist and former Computing Coordinator for the ATLAS Collaboration (2019–2020). After completing his Ph.D. at Lancaster University in the UK, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at that institute, before moving to CERN to take up an Experimental Physics Fellowship. He is now a researcher in the High Energy Physics at Oslo University in Norway. He has been a member of ATLAS throughout his career.

Fascinating talk. I thought I can call myself fan of the CERN . Now this talk shows there are unlimited areas and stories underground and above ground to indulge in. Thanks for the effort and keep up with the good work.

Rather than the relative speed, what is the main reason to use primarly C++ and not Python or R for ATLAS? If it is only speed, why not use acceleratic software like PyPy?

Amazing, dont know if exist, but Nasa have a program to people help, whith new planets data, maybe regular people can help you analizing data whith a program, all the best.
