One thing to clarify: hardware can exist without software, and software can exist without hardware. Your fridge's cooling system doesn't allow you to program it, most likely because the algorithm is implemented using hardware and virtual machines(eg you emulating a DS to play Pokemon) doesn't require you to have a DS in your hands. Realistically and practically though, hardware and software go hand in hand to form computational systems like your general-purpose computer.
