What is a trowel and what does it do? I have often been asked what trowel size should be used with a certain size tile, in this video i try to explain I try to explain what a trowel actually is, and what its purpose is. A trowel may seem like a straightforward tool to use, but people often use it in the wrong way, if you understand what a trowel is supposed to do, it is easier to use the trowel in a proper and effective way. The most important determining factor that will dictate the type of trowel that should be used is the size of the trowel, however it is not a hard and fast rule. The shape of the tile, the pattern on the back of the tile, whether the tile is cupped and other factors might influence the trowel size selection. In general the larger the tile, the larger the notch size. There are also different shapes for the teeth or notch of the trowel, but here i am just explaining the basics.

I know you're old school but thanks for being technologically literate Sal. The information on this channel is always top notch. I know several old guys full of knowledge that will probably die with them. Thanks for passing it on!

Sal, Your videos and expertise is amazing. What is equally impressive is that you actually answer and respond to the commits that you receive. I say for me and many others..."THANK YOU... FOR ALL YOU DO!"

Hi. I just find tiling my shower. I used 12x24 ceramic tile and a 1/2 by 1/2 inch trowel. The last row the thin set was starting to harden but able to trowel it on. And I couldn't move the tile around to compress the ridges but gave it good taps with a rubber mallet. Do you think I should be good?

What if you're going from a large format wall tile to a 2x2 Mosaic cap? 1/2" x 1/2" for the LFT. Just stick with it for the mosaic?

Does the height of the thin set layer directly correlate to the notch’s height or would it be a bit less? For example, if using a 1/4” x 1/4” square notch trowel, would the general height of the thin set be 1/4” high or more like 3/16” or 1/8” since the angle should be 45 degrees? I ask provided I am attempting to determine the total rough height of flooring relative to my 3/4” thick hardwood flooring in hallway - don’t won’t the floor transition height to be noticeable if I can help it! Also, does Laticrete have an uncoupling membrane that is waterproof? I’m aware of Strata Mat (per one of your videos) but cannot identify a waterproof variant on Laticrete’s website.

Thanks for letting us know 3 times in the video to keep the trowel at 45 degrees. I was about to start a job with 270 degrees and a bent rusty trowel I found in the dumpster.
