Did anybody notice Windows 7 is the xp logo and Windows 8 is 7 logo. Also, during Windows 8, there is a computer window in the bottom left, and the Windows 10 numbers are thinner than the word "windows". The reason they skipped 9 is because windows 95/98 exist. People would think it was something from windows 95/98 and not use it. If Microsoft made windows 9, the situation of sales could be similar to the wii u incident, people not knowing if its better.

I think the answer is what you had said about getting confused with Windows 95 or Windows98.

I always assumed it was because their was a windows 9 that just got scrapped

That's what i always heard too, version checks of win95 and win98 would be confused with win9

OsX was very successful so to come out with something that had a lower number scared some ms ppl off and they went straight to 10 to "catch up".

Windows 8.1 was basically 9. Plus it was right at the time when everyone was jumping to keep up with the whole round number thing Apple started with the hype around iPhone X

Windows 95 was Windows 4.0 and Windows 10 is Windows NT 10.0, a different version number of a different product line, so the version check hypothesis is invalid.

Its probably bcuz 9 is considered an unlucky number. That's also the main reason most tech companies skip the 9th iteration of their product.

WIndows 9 was made for kiosks you see in stores, it was so they could separate the updates tailored to them.

7 ate 9 sounds reasonable since the question is way above my pay grade.

On the subject of numbers how high do you think the windows numbering system will eventually get?

They're all plausible arguments, but if I were a computer, I might find it difficult to differentiate between "9" and "98" or "95" or other "9x" numbers.

Also, Windows 8.1 might have been a De-Facto Windows 9, so maybe they should've ideally named it "8+1" (8-PLUS-1) instead of 8-point-1 as they actually did.

In the aviation industry, 9 is pronounced NINER so people would not confuse it with 5

They did release Windows 9. They just named it Windows 8.1... It was so that the NT version would match the operating system version`

They didn't wanna put Windows 10 in between 9/11 😂

I hope not! My RAF service number had four nines in it!

I think 7 ate 9 is an accurate summary.
