I'm having some issues with my roommate. He's a pretty extroverted guy who really likes to talk, and he often gives me updates about his life at a time that isn't convenient for me.

I'd usually "sit through" these updates until I could go back to doing whatever I was doing before, and I probably seemed outwardly cheerful about it...

But there have been a few instances where I'd be on my way out the door to go to the gym, for instance, and he'd stop me to tell me something. Then he'd pause the conversation because he received a text. So I'm putting my life on hold to listen to him, because he wanted to, and now he's putting that conversation on hold to text someone else, also because he wanted to.

My first response to this was rather unproductive - I would just walk out of the house without saying anything. But that doesn't actually do anything to resolve the situation, and I don't want to lower the standards of my behavior simply because he upset me.

So... how do I get this back on track? I want to honor his values and take into account his perspective, but I don't think he has the same ability to see things from someone else's perspective, and I'm worried that he'll immediately confuse my desires with "don't talk to me unless I give you permission."

I really want to do right by both him and myself, and I'm at a loss for how to do it. Can you offer me some advice?
