Why are Old Games so Hard?!

Well! This is a topic I didn't think I was going to make! But this actually does beg the question, what console is better? Because although the Switch has it's flaws... so does the Wii U.

Another reason I’ve heard is that game devs were the play testers, get good at the game, then alter it towards their skewed idea of “fair”

The Nintendo Switch online rewind feature is a legend because if you die, you can rewind to before you died

There is another reason but it mainly extends to arcade games which were played using tokens or real coins (likely of the country you play the game in, the tokens were also bought with money) and if you died or lost, you could revive using tokens, so the harder the game the more tokens you spend, meaning that there was a financial incentive to make arcade games as hard as possible

Kid Icarus is genuinely of the most rage inducing things I've played

Surprised to see nobody has mentioned the precursor to microtransactions: Strategy guides. If they make the game super hard, players will be encouraged to pay extra for a guide to help them beat the game...

Another reason why they were hard was also a market strat where if you rent it out it makes you want to complete it before returning it

In home console games it was to make games last. You needed to get your money’s worth and publishers wanted you to be held over until they could release their next game, they wanted to keep you hooked. If you look at arcade games (especially those of the era) those were hard to get you to keep putting in quarters

We started with arcade cabinets that were made super hard to try and get as many quarters as possible. That difficulty carried over and lasted for a wile.

Part of the reason they are so hard is bc old NES carts had limited space (about 30kb if im remembering properly) so they made the games hard to make sure the player wouldnt beat them in a day or two...

Marketing back in the day, they were made harder back then so you couldn't beat it within one rental period, pushing you to buy the game.

It's because a lot of companies were used to designing arcade games, and the more the player died, the more quarters were inserted in the machine.

This mindset is also why the first MegaMan has a scorebar on the top of the screen that served zero purpose. It was mandated because other arcade games had them

Dude the music is giving me a stroke, I’m pretty sure there are three different pieces of music playing at certain points of this video

The reason why old school games are hard is because cartridges back then couldn't store much data meaning games would be really short. To extend the playtime these games are hard to make the game seem longer than it actually is. Games aren't built this way these days with our terabytes of storage, but back then we had kilobytes of storage; nothing even close to what we use today. I mean, have you seen the difficulty of the NES Mega Man games? Especially Mega Man 1?

You did an amazing job at the Smash tournament last night, Cdot!! I wasn't there during the actual stream, since I was busy, but I watched it back today and it was SO MUCH FUN TO WATCH!! Especially your game against Radoukens. I loved that. Anyway, have a great rest if your day!! :)
