Old Nintendo games! You may have experienced some of these older games and thought "Man this is not the cake walk style of game that I have nowadays!" They are tough! But why were they so hard back then and not as hard now?

I bought the Japanese SMB2 on my 3DS XL. I remember getting stuck on a level where there were castles in the background and a big jump you couldn't clear normally. But then I found a hidden brick block that blended in with the castles. That's when I thought "They weren't kidding about how hard this game is."

Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels was literally hell, I don't know how many hours I did on that game

Another reason was Renting games. Back in the days of Blockbuster, you could rent games and return them at a specific time. Many companies made their games so hard that they could not be beaten in a day, (no saving system too) so you'd constantly need to rent the game again. Also if you forgot to return the game in time, you'd pay a fine depending on how many days you're late.

Nowadays, people own tons of games, because gaming is commonplace. Back then, video games weren’t quite as commonplace as they were still seen as weird nerd stuff. Therefore, people generally had less games. So, developers wanted to make each game a good, complete experience.

Super Mario bros the lost levels did release in America in 1993 as part of the SNES game Super Mario All-Stars. Most Americans at the time thought it was a completely new game.

That actually makes a lot of sense. To get more play time, you slow down the players. Compare the length of older games to modern ones, and then imagine if the difficulty was the same for them all. These days, it would take forever to beat a game.

Another reason why they are so hard is because many people rented video games in video stores, by making the games harder the player was less likely to Finnish the game so they would have to rent it multiple times to win one good example of games that did that are the lion king and Aladdin games

Actually in an Australian ad it’s says that the reason the games were so hard is because that way you would have to rent it multiple times or just buy it

Also nintendo hated rentals, so they made games you couldn't beat in one rental.

Plus back then people would play games over and over for that satisfaction of finally being good enough to beat a level, whereas now people will just switch to a different game if it’s to hard.
