VG Myths - Can You Beat Sonic 1 & Knuckles Without Pressing Right Or Left?

Tonight on VG Myths, we try to beat another game without pressing right or left. Specifically the final game of the Genesis Sonic trilogy: Sonic the Hedgehog! As always, we'll be doing it in the only version where the run is feasible: the lock-on version featuring Knuckles the Echidna.

watching you do these challenges is always such a treat because you never skip out with save states or technicalities like younger me did in my versions lol. only you would spend 10 minutes defining what an input is to avoid a left press before the game even has started, incredible. also you should totally do sonic mania at some point, my videos on it are pretty old (and a little cringe) at this point. the world deserves a newer version from your perspective

I was so ready for her to just rotate the mousepad by 90 degrees, so that moving the cursor left or right would be accomplished through a forward-backward movement of the mouse.

Another bonus reason that clicking is allowed is that even if moving the mouse left and right is forbidden, (which you've established it's not), a computer with a touchscreen allows you to click without moving the mouse at all by just tapping the part of the screen that you want to click. This will make the cursor disappear, but moving the mouse again will prove that the cursor either stayed right where it was before, or teleported to the clicked location without actually moving right or left. Obviously that doesn't matter because as you proved, the game considers them different inputs, but I just find it fun that even applying the logic of a sentence in the english language in which moving the mouse is still moving, it's still possible to select Knuckles.

Seeing runs like this makes me think back to how it is (technically) possible to beat Kirby's Adventure without owning a Kirby game.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, playing the game can allow you to unlock timed demos of older titles, showing the games some characters originate from.

One of these is Kirby's Adventure, which happens to have 3 glitches in the first stage: Eating two enemies at once lets you get the Stone ability, rolling at the correct spot lets you clip through the floor and be underwater without swimming, and using stone underwater causes a game crash you can forcefully halt by pressing Start at the right moment to pause the game, making the end credits of Kirby's Adventure roll without owning Kirby's Adventure. Done fast enough, you can beat the demo's time limit.
