I definitely feel like this relationship probably happens a few years later in the timeline, when they get a bit older. Nemona is about 2-3 years older than the protagonist (so about 16 ish), so their relationship would be a bit more plausible a few years later without it being too weird. I would guess that they continue to be rivals and grow closer as they get older.
