Snip & Clip Vasectomy

When it comes to family planning, more men are opting for a less invasive method of sterilization. One called no scalpel vasectomy.

"It's a very simple, very routine procedure," says Dr. Alejandro Miranda-Sousa, urologist on Lee Memorial Health System's medical staff.

Instead of making two cuts into the skin required by a conventional procedure, doctors puncture the skin and reveal the vas deferens, which carries sperm from the testicles.

"We divide it, we cauterize it, we remove a little segment and put a tiny clip to make sure it's a permanent and effective procedure," says Dr. Miranda- Sousa.

The technique takes about 10 minutes and unlike a surgical vasectomy, which may lead to complications including bleeding, infection and pain- the incisionless method has few downsides.

"It heals on its own; we don't have to put in any stitches and it makes the procedure much more simple. Much, much less risk of side effects," says Dr. Miranda- Sousa.

About a third of all vasectomies are now performed this way. Like the procedure itself, the healing is relatively quick and painless.

"Blood thinners, aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin - those types of medications should be avoided a few days before the procedure. They come, we do the procedure, they should take it easy at home; usually take a day off of work. Within a week they should be back to normal," says Dr. Miranda- Sousa.

It takes on average three months for the reproductive system to clear and at that time, doctors can take a sample and determine whether the sterilization is complete.
