So You Want to Be a NEUROSURGEON #SHORTS

So you want to be a neurosurgeon. Neurological surgery, or neurosurgery for short, is concerned with surgical interventions of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. To become a neurosurgeon, you must complete a 7-year neurosurgery residency program after medical school which often includes one year of dedicated research time. This is the longest residency program, start to finish, out of any specialty.

In terms of competitiveness, neurosurgery is consistently ranked among the top 5 most competitive specialties to match into, meaning you’ll need high Step scores and plenty of research.

The median salary for neurosurgeons is $680,000 per year making it consistently one of the top three highest-paid specialties, duking it out with orthopedic surgery and plastic surgery for the number 1 spot.

That being said, neurosurgery is known for having one of the most challenging lifestyles of any specialty, even beyond residency. In addition, the patients you treat as a neurosurgeon are often very sick, meaning that poor outcomes are not uncommon.

If you can get past those aspects of neurosurgery, however, you’ll get the privilege of working on arguably the most fascinating and mysterious organ of the body–the brain–and get to work in one of the few specialties where you truly have the opportunity to save someone’s life.

I have nothing but respect for neurosurgeons. Not only the hardest and longest specialty to go through, but it usually entails a tough private life too. These are the people we should be celebrating in media, not social mediabimbos

I’m currently a neurosurgery resident. Definitely very demanding specialty but getting to see the impact it has on peoples lives at end is truly inspiring

I am actually a neurosurgeon right now, and would not recommend it for everyone! It's a lot of work, but if you specialize you make a lot of money and it is worth it in my opinion. I personally as of now pull in 2.5 million a year, so if you work hard it is much easier to achieve your goals!

I know you already have a video on this speciality but would love to see a part 2 to that. I don’t think 1 video does neurosurgery justice

Currently in school to pursue this path, take my MCAT in the spring and I just shadowed neurosurgeries this week. Definitely know this is what I want to do and am willing to work for it, but I absolutely hate the thought of research 😩 my least favorite thing would be to get stuck in a lab writing papers and doing menial work, my happy place is in the operating room
