DEFOLD TUTORIAL #1 - INSTALLATION AND OVERVIEW
If you want to learn a great tool for building amazing games that will run on either iOS or Android tablets/phones, Mac or Windows Desktops or on the web using HTML – I'd really recommend that you take a serious look at using the Defold Game Engine.
Welcome to this series of introductory tutorials where I’ll be walking you through the essential building blocks needed to design and develop great games.
The series consists of seven components:
1. KICKOFF – This is the tutorial you’re now watching – where you’ll learn about how to install Defold on your desktop (Mac or Windows) as well as get oriented to the Defold Editor.
2. IMAGE PROCESSING – This session will provide instructions on how to load images to your Defold game project as well as how to position them within your game. Some basic animation techniques are also described.
3. DRAG & DROP – A walkthough is provided on how you can support a user selecting a specific game object and dragging it to a new location within your game.
4. MOVEMENT – This tutorial describes the procedures needed to move a Game Object using either a pre-defined path, or based on user inputs via mouse or touch.
5. PHYSICS – Leveraging Defold’s Physics Engine – this tutorial reviews the concept of a collision object, used to trigger when one game object touches another, effects of gravity and bounce features.
6. GRAPHIC USER INTERFACE – A detailed description is provided on how you can incorporate button animations within the GUI as well as text notifications to users.
7. LEVELS AND MESSAGING – The final tutorial in this introductory series provides an explanation on how to accommodate multiple game levels to support different scenes or game chapters – as well as how to exchange information between game components.
If you are excited about learning how to use the Defold Game Engine – I hope you find these tutorials helpful.
Getting feedback via the comment section below is really important to me – it provides a great means for improving the quality of these tutorials.
