I have both cards, and I'm not planning on letting go of either one. When I applied for the gold, I got a 90k bonus (not long ago)

I have both! I got a 100k bonus points with Chase in 2021, and a 90k bonus with Gold in 2023…both cards are great. One thing I love about the sapphire are that the points are MORE for travel and for a few months out of the year for apple products. My 100k bonus turned out to be around $1, 350 bonus for travel and apple products, which is phenomenal. Even if I only have like 2000 points, I can stretch my those to more for flights. Also, the Amex flight prices are more expensive than what I can find on google or skyscanner, while the sapphire search engine for flights have the exact same prices that I can find on google. Either way both cards rock

I wouldn’t have given it to Amex gold for the AF category. Only a small amount of people might use the entire $240 eating credits. Even if you don’t factor in the credits for either card, CSP would still be better trade.

Everyone forgot about the 10% anniversary perk that comes with the CSP bringing down the annual $45 fee even lower.

I initially got the CSP with a 60K SUB (*cries in 80K SUB) in early January and hit the bonus in late February. I applied for the AMEX Gold in late March and get the increase SUB of 90K points plus $200 in statement credits. I couldn't resist, so I caved and hit the bonus in mid May. For the moment, I don't foresee myself downgrading either of these because they are so valuable. The increase travel protections with the CSP are second-to-none and plus the extra 25% points boost on the portal is awesome! For the Gold, I use the dining credits every month since i eat out regularly. The 4X points on groceries is awesome as well since I spend quite a bit on them monthly. If there is one caveat and a bit of a disappointment with the Gold card is that not all "Dining" places code as "Restaurants." Some places like breweries or taverns don't code correctly and you only get 1X back! If it was a small purchase I would have shrugged it off, but I used it at an out-of-town tavern and the bill was like $200 and I was robbed of the extra points! I learned my lesson and now if I am even questioning whether a "food" establishment will not code as a restaurant, I use the CSP. I noticed that bars and taverns, food merchants at malls, and even local food trucks code correctly with the CSP and you get 3X points for dining! However, now that I hit the bonus with both cards, I use the AMEX primarily for dining (80--85% of the time) and when I'm in doubt, I'll use the CSP to get the guaranteed 3X points. I went on a rant, but I love both cards! I plan on keeping them both for AT LEAST another year and maybe longer. Who knows? LOL

PS- Thanks for the info and for your great insights and comparisons as always!

I think the biggest problem for AMEX gold is a lot of place dont take that card including Costco.

Gold card is great if you are already using uber and dining at those restaurants but for me I never use either so those credits will be worthless to me. As such I just use the Citi Custom Cash to get 5% back on groceries and another card for 3% back on dining.

I’d say the SUB category is a bit skewed, as Amex Gold (and all Amex cards) only allow 1 lifetime SUB on personal cards. Chase allows eligibility for a new SUB on Sapphire cards every 48 months.

My Amex Gold sign up bonus was 90k when I signed up a few months back

I would say that where I live, any Uber eats or grub hub order costs well over $10, more like $20-$30 for a single meal. You’re basically just paying for the delivery fee. Which is cool but for someone who trends away from these rather expensive, this is not free money back but really an incentive to change my habits towards potentially less responsible practice. So the chase would really win out in that category for me personally

Preferred just for unlocking the potential of other Chase cards and high limits and having a Visa with no international fees for travel. Gold seems to crush it in capturing household spend in big categories as well as covering the large annual fee to stack points. Gold is on my radar for early 2024 when I no longer have 5x via my Chase Flex card on grocery.

Though the Amex Gold seems a little better, one thing that a future cardholder needs to keep into account is that the Amex Gold is a charge card, not a credit card; the future cardholder needs to make sure they know what that means and evaluate if they are comfortable with the terms involved. If not comfortable with a charge card, I think it's better to go with the CSP.

Personally, I'd say "Why not both"? This was a great breakdown of both cards, however, I wouldn't necessarily pin these against each other, rather I'd look at using them in combination with each other instead just like you said!

Glad I have both. If I had to, edge goes to CSP - 90K bonus last month (in Chase branch), stronger UR points multiplier and Visa accepted everywhere.

Man thats is a tough decision. The CSP was my favorite for a long time, but I recently got the gold, which im loving!

Here’s my Take:
Gold - better multipliers for food, but more restrictive for travel & harder to redeem pts

CSP - better travel protections, lower AF, easy to use pts
But lower multipliers & online grocery only.

Conclusion: Get Both! 😎

I'm so confused why nearly no one compares Amex Green to CSP. I think the Chase trifecta forces everyone to think of the 2nd most expensive card in the lineup as the 'mid tier' so they compare Gold vs CSP, when in reality the Green is much closer in terms of use cases and AF. If you are able to use CLEAR, the green more than pays for itself with that credit alone. The only real thing CSP has over Green is groceries, but that's where Green/Gold differ. Green is all travel while Gold is more everyday spending.

Just an FYI that 4x earning on groceries for amex gold exclude walmart and target. I just wish a lot of YouTubers bring that up since most people shop over there

I don’t think the gold is for me, I don’t use Uber and those food options aren’t around my area.

You missed that csp has partner credits like doordash, gopuff, instacart. I think that would change the annual fee rational… 8:59

Great video! Really appreciate this as these cards are definitely in similar "tiers". I ultimately choose the Amex Gold (and the Amex ecosystem as a whole) due to Rakuten's ability to earn MR rather than cashback. It's a game changer, and makes the Amex Gold a catch all for all sorts of points and savings opportunities.
