Toyota Rav4 Prime Electronic All‑Wheel‑Drive Diagonal Test notes: We had a tough time with TRAIL MODE with the RAV4 on our diagonal test hill! It let more wheel slip than anticipated. So the best way to get up the diagonal test was to let the Rav4 Prime in EV MODE or AUTO EV/HV and gently press the throttle when you feel it needs it. Do not floor it and do NOT turn off the TCS! We think that the RAV4 TRAIL mode is pretty useless ( wait until you see the roller/slip test, then you will believe it even more! ) At 1:35 we had to back down because of the slip sound it made inside, it was not giving power to the rear... we have not figured the reason why. AT 2:18 we turn back Trail mode and, and off it goes...

I see great improvement of the AWD-e system which is still a FWD with the rear support. The previous generation of RAV4 hybrid failed pretty much the test. Great video and we can hear the power train working.
About the TRAIL mode it works batter on the rocky or loose surface there is a video of TFL cars testing it in the mountains. Well done Toyota lots of improvements. Thanks for testing :-)

@Car Question CQ. I seer a review with the Rav4 Prime take it up a rocky trail in the mountain in EV mode only with trail mode and it did very well without a struggle, and I seen the same review take the regular RAV4 Hybrid up that same rocky mountain trail before the RAV4 Prime was on the market and it did ok also, but the Prime did much better then the regular RAV4 Hybrid in the mountain trail with rocks. I think it might be other unseen or know factor that might make one test do well and another one not so well. as you rightly said not to floor the throttle, so that goes to show that how a person manage the throttle along with the system will make the out come varies. I enjoy viewing your test. If I had the money I would have been going for the RAV4 Prime it capability meet more then my needs.

Please try this with the gas Rav4 LE/XLE: Dying to know if they upgraded the regular Dynamic Torque Control. It will weigh heavily in my purchase decision.

Well this is most certainly a major improvement from last year! They need to send out the new software program into all older years! This is BS that it's taking them almost a decade to finally make it decent

yep works good, like torque vectoring. The new Lexus UX AWD does it the same way.

I remember you did this test on the old Highlander, and it failed everything, I would love to see the same test on the new Highlander with the regular AWD.

The one thing I really don't like is how fast the car lets the wheels spin when losing traction. I feel like they move a lot faster than if they were connected to a normal transmission in first gear, and they burn a LOT of rubber when they hit the ground. But maybe it just sounds worse due to the lack of engine noise?

not bad, it will get you in and it will get you out. I wonder how fast is the reaction time for the rear to kick in when taking off on the snowy icy flat surface.
