Apple has been saying this forever but we should know that they’re not on the level of Samsung, Sony, LG and many others when it comes to R&D, innovation and development. They don’t have the facilities yet and won’t for a long time coming as they require cheap parts and labour to profit large from their products. Something they won’t be able to do operating in sunny US. - So they will continue to operate in China because it’s cheaper.

Apple trying to design everything in house I think is a bad idea. They will be spreading themselves too thin and creating weak spots with their dependency on a limited number of fabrication companies. It's risky going it alone.

Just like everything else that Apple manage to finally design and produce in house has made each and every single thing designed in house to a whole Nother level, bringing hardware, software and services integration to a whole Nother level it’s self

Apple designing more components in house is a great idea. They’ll have more direct control over the supply chain leading to better engineered and more efficient products. Just look at Apple silicon to see the advantage.
