The downward spiral of the animation quality is scarier than the spirals in the show themselves.

And the sad thing is, this is the best adaptation of any Junji Ito’s work.

As a horror fan, I'm embarrassed that I actually recommended this to people.

To anyone hasn’t read Junji Itos works, especially if it’s just Uzumaki it’s an absolutely wonderful book and his ability to create horror stories is so impressive. Like I’ve read The Enigma of Amigara Fault and was proven that you can get jumpscared by a comic.

The end of Uzumaki is sorta intresting. the idea that the town and its inhabitants are “perpetually trapped in a never ending Spiral of life and death” reincarnating and rebuilding that town and people falling under the curse of the spiral all over again. (2B Nier Automata).

The stiff, awkward animation after the first episode was more scary than any disturbing imagery shown in this anime.

Junji Ito's animation adaptation curse continues.

David Zaslav needs to be immediately removed from Warner Bros at once. Even anime isn't safe from him.

uzamaki deserved so much better...they should have released the episodes later than usual so it could have still the junji ito charm :-(

I feel like the only way to salvage any junji ito adaptation is to go full on traditional like the productions from the 80's. The roughness is masked as detail perfect for his style.

2:24 an authentic depiction of how people react when hearing "ad time"

7:10 Production I.G. only produced Uzumaki through funding, as a partnership with Adult Swim, but they did not animate anything. Episodes 1 and 4 were produced at Fugaku, while episodes 2 and 3 were made at Akatsuki and Phoenix Animation Holdings, chinese studios.

Imagine an anime only sequel to Uzumaki that satirized the animation quality going down by having Shuichi and Kirie become self aware and notice the drop in animation quality and trying to get to the bottom of it.

At the very least episodes 3 and 4 were an improvement. Aside from that one shot in the latter. Not as good as the first episode but still better than episode 2.

Also David Zaslav can go [[HYPERLINK BLOCKED]] himself.

I was actually pretty excited for this one when adult swim first showcased the teaser (since it looked genuinely promising and the animation looked amazing plus them going the black and white route just like the manga?? I was sold) sucks it basically went downhill so fast 😭 I don’t think we’ll ever get a faithful or accurate anime version of any of Junji Itō’s work 💀

Hi Spark, great vid! Huge fan of your content.
Just a little correction. The Studio changing from episode 1 to episode 2, 3 and 4 isn't a rumor, is a fact.
Production I.G is in the credits of all episodes because it is the producer along with Adult Swim. The actual animation Studios are Fugaku and Akatsuki.
Studio Akatsuki was the one responsible for the declining animation in episode 2 and onwards.

Just to clarify for those who don't know the difference. The studio that produces isn't the same as the studio where all the animation is done. Production I.G put money onto the project and help to kept it going, but no one at that studio worked directly on the animation, that was Fugaku and Akatsuki's work.

Before the release it was pretty much agreed that if this adaptation failed then it would basically be impossible to adapt Ito's work at all to anime form. I believe we have our answer now.

I went in blind to Junji Ito’s Japanese Tales of the Macabre, and I have to say, it’s called macabre for a reason. I know nothing about Junji Ito, and I’ve never watched an anime, but it was definitely an interesting experience. Even though I don’t know anything about the man or his work, it caught my attention and I consider it my favorite scary anime (I’ve never seen any others).

Even with the animation falling off, I still love Uzumaki because it's the closest I think we can realistically get to a perfect Ito anime adaption. And I've used it to get my mom and 2 roommates into Uzumaki without having to pressure them to read manga.

The most important part to me is the art style which of all the adaptations is really preserved. Choosing to animate in black and white was a really good decision because more time can be spent on the line work.

Obviously it's flawed, but I didn't go in expecting perfection, I went in expecting Uzumaki and Uzumaki is what I got.

I rate it a 7/10

The way the show degraded was just like that episode in Gumball where they all slowly faded away, and the whole show downgrades

Episode: The Money

Edit: My favorite part is when they get in the bus and indirectly kill Rocky and the kids. Oh and Mr Robinson yelling Roadhog
