The Da-words remind me of Old English literature and poetry, wherein oft were used such similar words, like “whereby”, “therefore”, “herewith”, and “notwithstanding”, instead of modern phrases like, “by which”, “so then”, “with it”, etc. Every time I hear “dabei”, “dadurch”, “damit”, “dazu”, etc, I get a little thrill inside and I think “OH! Like Shakespeare!” Kinda silly, huh? But it’s true. I just love those poetic Da-words! -Phill, Las Vegas

German with Jenny points out that you don't ever use a da-compound when referring to an animate object (ie, a person or animal) ONLY an inanimate object. I found that explanation super helpful.

English has similar class of adverbs: thereof davon, therefore deshalb, thereon darauf, thereby damit, dabei?, therewith damit, thereto dazu, therein darin, theretofore dafür, thereafter danach, and plenty more.
The words are generally more formal in English.
Both languages also have similar wo-/where- and hier-/here- words.
