It's a hard question. On one hand, we only believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins, but on the other hand we need to be able to determine which baptisms we consider legit. I remember when a Swedish man from an evangelical church entered my Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch. I was disappointed back that my church rebaptised him rather than only chrismating him, but now later I'm not sure about my stance on this. Our church has a 3 in one baptism, where the infant is immediately chrismated and gets a spoonful of eucharist right out of the baptismal font. If they are boys we also take them around the altar. None of those practices are held in the protestant churches. But then, the Apostles only baptized through immersion in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All other liturgical practices have developed over time and we know from early liturgical records that Antioch was very reluctant to use the dove as a symbol for the Holy Spirit in its first 4 centuries because of pagan misconceptions among the laity, so our practices in the West Syriac Rite have developed over time, and so have all churches.

I think since the Greek Orthodox Church agreed with the Copts that they would mutually accept each other's baptisms, and the Roman Orthodox Church of Antioch is in communion with the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch, and the Armenian Apostolic Church is in communion with both the Copts of Alexandria and the Syriacs of Antioch, their baptism should be valid in the Greek Orthodox church. We should avoid rebaptisms as far as we can in my opinion, since both Scriptures and Tradition teach us that one should only baptize once.

I am converting and I talked to my priest today and he said because I was baptized at 8 months old in a Protestant church did not matter but I would not be baptized again. I hope that helps! I know I am way late to the party. :-)

I actually requested to be rebabtised instead of just chrismation, it just felt like the correct thing to do from my perspective.

The way us Catholics handle if there is an uncertainty of a previous baptism is to do a conditional baptism. It adds something like, "If you have not been baptized then I baptize...etc."

Blessed feast Bojan! Funny that this video came up, I just was baptized yesterday on theophany. No second baptism though, as I was received from a Jewish household.

Hello Boyan (bojan ? boian ? idk sorry for being french and don't knowing much about slavic language and names) happy theophany (or merry christmas, it depends on which calendar) i'm here leaving a comment because i've a problem. I go to an orthodox church (greek one) since 2 months in my town in france, and I would love to be baptised, the sooner possible (imagine if i die because of a car crash or something before being baptised )': ) .
But I have one problem. For being baptised, i must have godfathers, don't I ? and i don't know who to choose, because i don't have any orthodox close relatives, and I don't know very well the christians in my churchs (i've barely seen them 5 times each one and i haven't ever talked to the majority)

So my question is : are godfathers really needed if i want to be baptised, and can i be baptised without having any godfather ?
And if i must have a godfather, who can i choose ? Can the priest be my godfather ? Can non-orthodox people be my godfathers ? Can strangers or people that i don't really know be my godfathers ?
