I have been craving edamame lately because it is now edamame season. We usually eat it every summer. Today, I am going to show you 2 easy, delicious recipes to cook.

🥢PRINTABLE RECIPE - Check back later

NO.1 Five-spice Edamame

400 grams (14 oz) of edamame without the pods
1 tsp of salt

Bring a pot of water to a boil. Cook the frozen edamame for a few minutes.
Drain it and let it cool naturally. Simply season it with salt, five-spice powder, and sesame oil. Toss thoroughly.
Serve as a side dish.

NO.2 Spicy Garlic Edamame

400 grams (14) of edamame, with the pods
2 tbsp of vegetable oil
1/4 cup of minced garlic
4 Thai bird eye chilies, diced (optional)
1/3 cup of water

Bring a big pot of water to a boil. Cook the edamame for a few minutes. If you use fresh edamame, simmer it a little longer, about 8 minutes. Take it out and let it cool.

Add 2 tbsp of vegetable oil, cinnamon stick, bay leaves, star anise, and Sichuan peppercorns to a saucepot. Stir over low heat for a minute or 2. Then toss in 1/4 cup of minced garlic, and some diced hot chili. If you don’t eat spicy food, you can skip the chilies.

Add 1/3 cup of water. Bring it to a simmer and turn off the heat. Season it with 1/3 cup of soy sauce and 3 tbsp of Chinese black vinegar.

Pour the sauce into the edamame and toss thoroughly. Let it marinate in the fridge for 6 hours and serve as a cold dish.

I like edamame, we can get them here in the UK. But i've never though of saucing them up. Boiled in the pod, left to go cold, then eaten from the pod as they are with just a little salt. They're a lovely bean and taste so fresh. A great snack.

I always prefer steam frozen vegetables rather than boiling, I think boiled vegetables get to watery. With frozen edamame pods, I just steam them and then fry t’hem and season them with kosher salt. The simplier the better :)

I love edamame! We are fortunate that some restaurants serve them as appetizers here. I decided to try to grow my own so I could eat them fresh. Can't wait to harvest them! Will try your recipe when I do.

I first encountered Edamame In Japan in 1991 served as a nibble in a small bar to accompany cold beer.
The pods were fresh, and it was a great source of amusement to my escorts when I ate them pod and all.
I found them delicious and a good match for the beer. I haven't been able to find the fresh pods here in Australia. I'm now going on the hunt for frozen pods to give the spiced pod recipe a go. I might try it on snow pea s too.
Cheers Eric

Thank you. I always buy the edamame in the pods, but steam it and eat it plain. I’ll try this recipe soon.

I've never had fresh edamame before but I one day will when I visit some friends in Japan. What I tend to do is eat the beans with a sauce of garlic, ginger, onions, and a bunch of curry spices

The boiled in the pod version is a lot like the way we boil peanuts (except boiled peanuts take a lot longer to cook). You have to let them soak in the brine they cook in for a little bit so the salt gets inside the shell. I bet the taste is similar.
