The reason the men's is free is because we don't use them. If it's locked we just find the nearest bush, or tree, or whatever we can use to block our business, if not, it's ok, we don't care if you stare.

Having seen squat toilets before, you don't need a splash guard. In fact, that mesh might cause splashback rather than prevent it. So I'm thinking it's probably not guarding you from splashes but protecting the urinal from non-liquid objects.

Dear Euros: there is no dignity in having to pay to use the restroom. Just charge .01 cent more for items in the store and make it free!

The reason regular toilets in some places cost money while urinals are free is because regular toilets can be used for number 1 AND/OR number 2, meaning more water, plumbing and space required. Has nothing to do with discrimination.
