My aphaenogaster colony is surprisingly aggressive when it comes to hunting crickets. I find it interesting because they’re my most active hunters, but also the most docile, even meandering around if I open their home up and bump them when removing stuff. Generally not caring it seems lol

As an experiment, after reading a few threads on Formiculture, I made one batch of sugar water with electrolytes, and one without, and coloured them differently. The ants much preferred the mix with electrolytes added. I used Lite Salt, and a little bit of Epsom salt and bicarbonate soda for electrolytes. It might be unnecessary, but they do seem to prefer it. :)

For sugar I buy pre-made ant nectar which is super easy, and all my ants love it. For protein I breed insects. It’s super easy and cheap. Also there are a lot of seeds that some ants like, other than chia seeds. The thing is most ants don’t eat seeds. There are some ants are very granivorous and almost entirely consume seeds, such as Pogonomyrmex and Messor. Some ants are semi-granivorous and will eat some seeds, such as some Pheidole, some Aphaenogaster, and more. But in general a lot of ants won’t consume seeds, especially Myrmecia.

Yay, Ant Invasion In! Probably worth mentioning that poor Eli lost a colony after seemingly harmlessly offering them a piece of snake for protein. Still so sad about that. Another feeding option is purpose-made "ant protein jelly" that you can buy in little plastic pots - very easy, but I never have much luck with the stuff myself. If you're trying mealworms be sure to get fresh ones complete with tasty juices, you'll just be wasting your time if you get the much more readily-available dried ones that are only good for bird feeding. Great suggestion about crushing seeds too to help out a fledgling colony - hadn't thought of that.

Harvester ants don’t eat sugar or honey ☝️ They do however eat apple slices

I have mini nigacepcs queen and about 7 workers plus many eggs
Issue is the queen is the one getting the food

My MessorB. don't care too much for bugs though gras and dandelion seeds are all the rage! A halfed cricket or so is interesting at times.

My C.Foreli love destroying alive fruit flies and don't care much for dead stuff...

My bigheads KILL EVERYTHING even if jt was already dead. Seriously they take anything flesh NO QUESTIONS ASKED! ... Lil monster's...

Overall I'd recommend MEDIUMish crickets since handling is easier and they munch for a while. Also it's not as likely they drag it into the nest.

Worms they take if cut up in 1/4. Especially smaller ants that can get inside.
Mil worms simply have too hard chitin and messors can't be bothered. No acid or so.
