How much are renovations on our 23,000 sq. ft. Italian lake house costing us? When we bought it in 2020, we received a €45,000 quote for basic work: roof replacement, skylights, new flooring, updated electrics, and essential repairs. Unfortunately, our builder passed away, and delays caused by COVID and rising material costs left us scrambling for new contractors.
With tax incentives for renovations, we hired an architect who found us a great team, and we expanded our plans to include more skylights, an extra bathroom, and a window. We budgeted €100,000, but old houses hide surprises—like rotted window lintels. Now, we’re over budget.
To finish, we’ve become our own labor force (thankfully, Paul’s experienced!). We'll share updates on costs as we go. In the meantime, if anyone at Leroy Merlin, Black Zecker, or other home stores wants to collaborate, let me know! Follow along to watch our progress.
