Senate votes today on WEP/GPO repeal

Update: By a vote of 73-27, the US Senate has overwhelming approved cloture on HR82. Full debate may begin this evening or be held on Thursday. A cloture vote is the first step to bring the Social Security Fairness Act to the Senate floor for a full vote. While we remain cautiously optimistic that the 60-vote threshold is secure and will hold, much work remains to be done in the few days remaining in the Congressional session. We are concerned that the adoption of any amendments to HR82 could run out the clock and derail the passage of the bill. We continue to urge the Senate to vote NO on amendments and hold a “clean vote” to pass HR82 prior to Friday’s deadline to get the bill onto President Biden’s desk for his approval. As we have reported in the past, Biden does support full repeal of WEP/GPO and we anticipate that he will quickly sign the bill into law – the Senate simply needs to pass the bill!

The cloture vote passed by a vote of 73-27. HR82 now moves forward for full debate before the Senate. While the exact timing is not yet know, we believe debate will take place later today or on Thursday. Today was a big win for retirees, but we are not done yet.
