Teenager's shirt torn off when door plug blew out on Alaska Airlines flight from Portland

A passenger on the Alaska Airlines flight Friday night said that a teenage boy's shirt was torn off when a side panel of the plane flew off midflight. He ended up sitting beside her after being moved from his seat next to the open hole.

Thank God he did not have a child on his lap. That was my biggest fear when they sat me & my 11 month old baby on my lap. I kept looking at that door going please 🙏 god dont let that door open because of it did my son probably would have went out the door. Thank God everyone on the plane was not hurt.

It was terrifying after the loud noise! You didn't realize what happened until you actually saw a giant gap on the side of the plane!

I flew back home on Alaska Airlines the day before this happened. I remember being on the plane thinking, “Wow, I’m glad to be flying on this airline! To my knowledge, nothing bad has ever happened with them!”

thats terrifying he was unseated at one point to move up and sit next to her.. im shocked he was not pulled out of the plane when he got out of his seat. he must've moved fast and have been hanging on for dear life.

This is why they make people stay belted for awhile after take off. Generally if something like this happens, it will happen directly after take off because of the pressure changes.

Might have been very lucky that the door plug did not smash into the horizontal stabilizer (tail) of the plane. I have no idea what a curved surface object like that door does when it meets a 400 or 500 k slipstream.

I read that a hole the size of a window in the side of an aircraft can have 1, 000 pounds of force pulling towards it during decompression. It's not all Hollywood, you can be sucked out of a plane.
