New House Wiring Changing Lights - Lighting Circuit Using the 2 Plate Method or 3 Plate Method?

preview_player
Показать описание
After teaching almost exclusively the 3 plate method of wiring lighting circuits for the past 19 years in college is the 2 plate method more common in new installation? In this video I look at the wiring in a brand new house to find out which method is being used. Is it easier to replace ceiling roses and pendant with new light fitting when the 2 plate method of wiring is use? I also show the Hager consumer unit looking at the type 2 SPD, A type RCCB's and circuit layout.

What’s the advantage of the 2 plate method?
Are there any advantages of the 3 plate method of wiring lighting circuits?

I can see the advantage of the two plate method, but I prefer to three plate as I don’t like over crowding the switches .
Fantastic video Gaz as always 👍👍❤️⚡️

I think feeding the switches is a good method as a lot of modern lights don’t have the space for 3 plating, years ago it seemed lights had more space in them, also when you are wiring for downlights it seems a much easier method 👍

I was always taught to wire lighting circuits using the three plate method however to days preferred method is the two plate method (feeding the switch) this has many advantages 1.making the majority of connections at the switch rather than up a step ladder at the light. 2.light fittings are only designed to take one twin & CPC 3.reduces the homeowner of incorrectly terminating the cables and causing a fault.

Another great video Gaz, love your content.😊 Always learning from you, especially how things are done in a real world situation🙂. I'm looking forward to joining an apprenticeship soon hopefully. Keep up the good work.👍🏼

I remember when I started my apprenticeship in 1989 - the 3 plate method was the main method in wiring lighting circuits within domestic dwellings

Me and a friend had a good chat about, should smoke alarms be wired own there own circuit or to a light, what we do is, if the house is council, then you go off a light as the person would more than likely to turn it off it it beeps, but if it’s privately owned, we do it to its own breaker. Also I like the two plate method more and you can always run a 3core cable to the lights so you have a spare wire to future proof if you need a live up there. 😉

I was always told run smokes separately but double up in fuse board MCB with a lighting circuit to stop customers turning the MCB off or tampering with them.

Hey I've got a couple of knives which look like yours. Ones's blue and the others black.
Imho smoke alarms should be integrated into the lighting circuits. As to prevent people switching off Mcb's or rccbo's for nuisance alarms. I've lost count of the amount of mains powered smoke detectors which have been switched off or tampered with. Best kept powered up.

I'm relatively new to the electrical training world (literally started last month) but I'm pretty sure smoke alarms are recommended to be on a regularly used circuit such as lighting as opposed to their own circuit where a fault wouldn't necessarily be caught as early.

I often put mains operated smoke alarms onto the lighting circuit at the CU, that way it's difficult for the consumer to simply switch off the smokes as the lighting circuit would also be lost. I have been into many installations were the smokes are on an independent circuit which is often switched off.

Top video Gaz I love watching your content so informative, I'm an adult learner due to start level 1 in September and determined to make it to my am2 and beyond! and I feel I've gained a lot of knowledge in the past few months of watching and learning and preparing for my journey ahead but I've got a few questions for Gaz if there is a way I could reach out and have a chat if you have time that would be great mate as always your video has been some help for sure cheers guys hope to hear back.

If it was my house I'd stick the smokes on their own circuit. On a customer's house then tap off a lighting point.
However, you can end up with some crowded back boxes by doing it this way

Please could you do a video on the testing procedure for a light replacement and filling out the minor works certificate.

I work for the social housing sector and I always make sure that the smoke alarms are wired to the lighting circuit and this is to prevent them from being switched ofg

Industrial spark here. Always wondered why you don’t put a maintaince free junction box directly above the switch drop in the floor. Feed in and feed out as per usual. 3 core and earth down to switch with a neutral if ever required for smart switch. Twin and earth with neutral and switched live to the lights from the junction box.

Labelled on consumer unit and in a client handover pack to let them know where junction boxes are. Less cables in both switch and light fitting that way.or am I missing something obvious, , , ,
