If i remember correctly, the strategy of lord Bolton in war in the book is to send the troops from other house in front line. So if it's a family tradition, the greystark was in front line and died in the war while the bolton stay alive away from the battle.

Sometimes i dont understand the starks. You kill your own kin who at first join rebellion with another rebel house who also flay one of your own blood. Also multiple times betray their oath to overtake northern leadership to be king of all northern lands from they liegelords. Sansa do the right think to annihilated the bolton for good. If one of roose bolton heir or son survive jon snow may pardon that boy 😂
