Information has become increasingly important in understanding the physical world around us, from ordinary computers to the underlying principles of fundamental physics, including quantum theory. How can information help discern physics? What can physics contribute to understanding information? And what about quantum information?



Max Tegmark is Professor of Physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He holds a BS in Physics and a BA in Economics from the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. He also earned a MA and PhD in physics from University of California, Berkeley.

The most fundamental existential Mechanism in the universe is “Exploration of degrees of freedom”.

Information describes the kinetic and potential of this exploration. The most effective structure for this exploration is when there is a processing unit, a storage unit and a mechanical unit for the information.

This triune structure can be seen from human beings with a conscious(processing unit), subconscious/genetics(storage unit) and body(mechanical unit) to a black hole with a holographic surface (mechanical unit), bulk(processing unit), singularity(storage unit).

Information is nothing more than perceptions of various aspects of reality - what these aspects are CONVEYING - and what each of us as individuals are capable of understanding. For example, space and time to a physicist A might convey one thing, but to physicist B quite another.

Since it is in formation, it comes before the form is complete. All matter has a form. So information comes before matter.

Information = Energy patterns?

A field is a physical quantity that changes throughout spacetime.

What if information is the device that encodes the change patterns of the energy field?
