Finland: Deforestation in a land of lumber | Focus on Europe

In Finland, record numbers of trees were felled in 2017. Environmentalists are outraged. The country’s trees capture the equivalent of about half the amount of CO2 it puts out. But lumber exports are vital to Finland.

Doesn't Finland plant 3 trees for every tree cut down.

This is a very lazy video. No hard numbers on planted trees and forests were given at all and I can see why as it would not fit the narrative. Finland forests have grown past 50 years every single year. In 1950 Finland's forests were 1500 million cubic meters. In 2017 that was 2473 million cubic meters. There are absolutely things to criticize about Finnish forest management, but that would have meant doing even the slightest of investigative journalism from DW's part. Rather you took opinions of two people with an agenda and didn't do any investigation at all.
Forest growth has to do with legislation on needing to plant as many trees as have been cut for decades now and a lot better forest care than 50 years ago.

Tree only absorb carbon when they are growing, mature trees a carbon neutral

Yes. It is a forrest field and needs care. If forest industry is made less productive, the wood amount in the forrests will go down from 2017 about 2500 000 000 m3 to the state it was 1960 which was about 1500 000 000 m3 which serves no one

Finland supposedly has the best educational system in the world; yet Niklas seems to have flunked his biology or ethics class.

A wide variety of things can be done to help reduce the rate of deforestation.

We can all do something to reduce our demand for wood. One thing that might help would be to keep our wooden furniture for as long as possible. If we replace it with brand new furniture too frequently, the demand for fresh wood will remain.

Some of the wooden furniture in my home is over 30+ years old and still in good condition. I have no plans to replace it any time soon.

Wooden furniture can last a long time if you take care of it.

More reason to legalize marijuana for the byproduct of Hemp and Hemp cannabis farms strictly for products that lumber industry can do too. In America, this is how Marijuana first got challenged, from Lumber lobbyists, among others like Alcohol, Pharma, etc.

Thank you for this report DW.

Man, I hope they realize how precious these trees and all the creatures in the forest are before it’s too late.

Why hasn't Finland invested in Hemp production? It grows significantly faster, can be used in the production of paper and pressed wood products.

These are no forests, but endless rows of synthetic mono-culture plantations whose only purpose is to grow for roughly thirty years only to be cut down again. When driving or walking through these "forests" all you can see is graveyards of felled trees, and deep trenches caused by heavy machinery. No animal wants to live there since it's not a real forest. In fact, if you look closely on google maps, you can easily see that 90% of the old forest has been transformed in an agricultural wasteland. What little wildlife there is left, gets hunted down by hunters eager to kill for pleasure using the commonly seen excuses of "wildlife management". Do not fool yourself, Finland’s Boreal forest has become the Amazon of Europe.

Strange. Finland has long been praised as a role-model when it comes to zero-corruption, quality of life index, human rights, gender and social equality, penal system, neutrality, happiness etc. When it comes to forestry though, Finland appears to be hardly different from Romania, Russia, Brazil, Indonesia or central Africa.
