We're now as far from Minecraft as Minecraft was from the original Doom

If anyone's wondering, China built a dam that formed a reservoir so big it changed the Earth's rotaation.

The fact that the Chinese can you make every clock be one second out of sync is hilarious even though it’s a bit more complex than that

"You can therefore blame China for the fact that one day is now seconds longer." - half as interesting

I can't believe I was reminded by this of all things about how old minecraft is

As a high schooler who just so happens to enjoy coding and using Linux, this video destroyed me (the leap second bug destroyed my internal processor)

Leap seconds are such a PITA, and for no good reason actually. It's always midnight *somewhere*, so it doesn't really matter if the time doesn't quite align with your geographic position.

The only reason leap seconds could possibly be useful is for astronomers tracking positions of celestial bodies, but astronomers use their own weird calendars (like JD) anyway, so they can sod off from the rest of us.

What happens if the leap second isn't introduced? The sun would arrive at zenith not at 12:00, but at like 12:17 in 700 years. At that point we can just adjust the timezones.

The thing is that timezones are *already* screwed up and no one cares, and to add insult to injury like half the world does DST, which misaligns clocks with Earth's rotation far more than a measly second once in a blue moon

So the leap second is just a problem someone pulled out of their arse and imposed on the rest of the world just cause they felt like it, and, just like DST or imperial measurements, it should be abandoned outright and put in the box of historic curiosities, like we already did with radium toothpaste and compulsory military service

You make great videos, really enjoy the writing, art style, and the editing. I’m sure 10x more goes into it than I even see. Keep it up!

There are also two clock standards, UTC which accounts for leap seconds and small adjustments, and TAI which just tries to count seconds with the highest accuracy possible

ooo, references to UTC, but the Y2K bug only affected industries that heavily relied on timekeeping, things like airports, hospitals, some government services, etc. businesses and other private sector stuff didn't really need to upgrade, it was just overblown at the time, and there was a lot of fearmongering. that means your typical office work could adjust to the digital clocks resetting, although linux probably didn't have this issue (I don't know, I wasn't there), it was mainly affected by win95 and win98 machines.
