If the government is going to force people to work, then they have to take responsibility for those people's wellbeing. And if they don't we need to remember that at the polls

You can't choose to opt out of paying into EI; they should not be able to deny it to you.

It still works just fine but only if you can get everyone to follow through. For the reasons you mentioned that's extremely difficult. Bit of a Prisoner's Dilemma, if everyone quits everyone can get better conditions, but if anyone doesn't the people who quit are screwed.

If your employer materially changes your situation (with out compensation) it's considered a dismissal

Yeah, the power of fear is not to be trifled. They see the tent cities too.

If we had had UBI when I was younger, I think I would never have entered the workforce. I would never have known the pride of earning my own money, nor would I have developed the skills, experience, and work ethic that empower me now. I'm all for giving workers more power, but I really think UBI would disempower a lot of young people in the long run.

Same in Australia. Walk off, 3 months for unemployment, which is about 300 a week if your single. Usually nothing if youre partnered.

Oh my god! I've been arguing for UBI for decades at this point.

No I don’t follow.
“We make a lot of social security programs reliant on how you lose your job, so we should give people a free income from the government”
I don’t see how the 2 connects.

Social security being tied up to getting fired is a problem, I can follow you on that and I’d agree that should probably be overhauled so anyone who lose their job for any reason is entitled to government benefits for x amounts of months so they have an income to pay for living while they either file for extended unemployment or search for a new job.

I can also follow the logic that if people are paid an income from the government they won’t need to rely on their work pay alone to make ends meet.

I don’t see how anything you said makes those 2 overlap though.
Sure if you had government income from the start you may not need social security, but if the program was still there same as it is now it would still have the same effect of discouraging just quitting as people still tend to live to their means so a sudden drop in income is as bad with or without UBI…

Ok who pays for the Universal Basis Income?
The government?
How does the government get money?
By charging taxes to people who work.
What happens if everyone thinks it's a good idea to just walk off their job?
Well the government has no money, and therefore can give you no money, and therefore prevents you from paying them money for taxes...

Nothing says balancing budgets and healthy economy like mass walk outs 😂

Just wait for pay, quit, search another job

Or you could look for a different job while you’re currently working at the shitty job it’s much safer much easier on the nerves and it gives you the peace of mind that you’re actually trying to solve a problem that you have in your life

Why do you need health benefits if you have socialized healthcare

For the "quit and get paid option" fix UI with reasonable limits on amounts -- don't introduce UBI.

Fan of universal income but let's be honest...it wouldn't be the high pay that these workers are receiving at their current job. That said a resume off to Tim hortons or literally any minimum wage job would be sufficient or at least what your imagining universal income would come out too. So yeah if you want mass quiting get your resume and look for another job, hopefully one that is closer or more than what your being paid now.
