Why Samurai Were Proudly Bald #Shorts

When you see samurai in historical dramas and movies, you’ve probably noticed that the top of their heads are bald. (Some might have lost their hair due to thinning, but) This hairstyle, known as ちょんまげ chonmagé, was created by the samurai intentionally by shaving their hair.

Why was being bald the typical hairstyle of a samurai?

Originally, long hair was tied back and raised high in order for the nobles to wear a crown called an 烏帽子 eboshi (crowned headgear).

The samurai carried on this hairstyle, but their purpose was different. It was for keeping the head cool when you wear a 兜 kabuto (armor helmet), and the patch of hair functioned as a cushion.

After the end of the Sengoku war era (1467-1615) and the beginning of the peaceful Edo period (1603-1868), samurai hardly had any occasions of wearing armor.

However, because it was a hairstyle that showed courage to go into battle at any time, it became popular not only among samurai but also among the commoners. In fact, there are several types of chonmage, as the popularity of chonmagé hair styles change rapidly.

Having a shaved head in a football helmet is an odd experience. I couldn't imagine wearing a samurai helmet

It’s cool how he could’ve just said it was to keep their head cool while in their helmet’s, but instead he added facts to make it a lot more interesting

I've always assumed that they used that hairstyle to look more mature and wiser 😂

Wait, i didn't know that eboshi means crown :0 So now when i think of lady eboshi from princess mononoke there is a whole other layer to her character, this is so cool💓 And thank you for teaching about a culture so fascinating as the japanese one🥺

The Top knot is my favorite is my favorite style but I'm sure they were instances of samurai who were completely bald once they became Buddhist.

I understand how this would help with cooling the head because I've been bald and had a cap on, it helps honestly when it gets hot or something

May I ask a question Mr. Shogo?, can you explain why ninjas were against samurai instead of becoming allies?

I love this. I have been looking to see if anywhere in history the reverse of what's in fashion in the 2010's-2020's was a thing (ie short/shaved sides long on top) and i had concluded that mullets were the closest thing. But i had forgot about this style!a neat moment of there almost always being a culture that has had a different style and views of atttractiveness then today.

my great grandpa was part of a samurai family ! his parents (my great great grandparents) weren’t able to conceive a baby so they adopted him :) but they sadly died when one of the atomic bombs was dropped in japan (i can’t remember if they were in hiroshima or nagasaki)

In India, boys shave their hair (a sign of ego)to mark celibacy or student life or during cremation, girls therefore didn't cremate generally bz after cremation u have to go bald(for hygiene purpose) and girls are called as Avatar of supreme soul (called energy)who is feminine, so they have better control on energy and never shave their heads even during celibacy but if u are a monk then sexuality has no role 😅 or in certain temples women too shaved their heads, I initially put the same idea in Japan, but thanks for enlightenment
