Guards at India-Pakistan Border Perform Independence Day Ceremony

Pakistan and India border guards take part in a daily ceremony at the Wagah border post as Pakistan celebrates the 75th anniversary of its independence, August 14, 2022.

Crowds go wild and soldiers goose-step in a chest-puffing theatrical ritual symbolizing the countries' antipathy after independence, but the display ends with a brisk, brotherly handshake.

Several hours before the ceremony, enthusiastic spectators begin trickling into sitting areas on either side of chunky iron gates separating the nuclear-armed Asian rivals at the Attari-Wagah frontier.

India and Pakistan, which celebrate 75 years of independence from Britain next week, share deep cultural and linguistic links but their history has been mired in violence and bloodshed.

I went to see this in 2014 whilst in Pakistan. It was quite extraordinary. What I really loved was the friendly banter between the people of both countries immediately after the ceremony ended

This is a testament to humanity's capacity for love, where even enemies can display respect, peace, & friendship for each other.

The smile on both the soldiers' faces as they shake hands reflects the actual love and respect between the common citizens of both countries. Together we can overcome all enmity and encourage healthy competition and cultural exchange between both these wonderful countries. Try not to give in to fear mongering and hate speech and you will see how beautiful both cultures are and admire them for what they are. Here's to a future of love, peace and harmony! 🇮🇳🇵🇰
