Introduction to Classical Physics

Physics is the grandaddy of the sciences! When those ancient dudes in togas were philosophizing about the way the universe works, they were setting the stage for what we now know of as physics, even though it didn't really get going until Galileo and Newton. Why should we study physics? What is the goal of physics? What do we mean when we refer to classical physics? Let's reflect together for a moment before we dive into this hefty subject, shall we?

online teacher just linked this instead of actually teaching the class. This is honestly better than what he could've done anyway

Hi Dave. I was a Physics major back in the last century. I am enjoying your segments.

I grew up in the days of Mister Wizard, and played with mousetraps (potential to kinetic energy) and all sorts of balls and rubber bands and inclines and catapults -- (2D Kinematics) and had metric tons of fun learning.

Built a Millikan Oil Drop experiment for Science Fair (took 1st place local, regional and state!)

As an undergraduate I taught labs and maintained the lab class equipment (inclined planes, force tables, ballistic pendulums, etc) and worked for the Planetarium. It was fun.

After graduation I spent a few years as a Grad Student and Lecture Demonstrator for the Physics Department. They basically paid me to play.

The only reason I left is I heard about a job that actually paid more than a University.

Some years ago I discovered Prof. Julius Sumner Miller (on late late late night PBS)

I'm retired now, so much of my day is spent on YouTube! Still do some tutoring from time to time.

 Cheers! "FZIX IS PHUN!"

This is great! Interesting and helpful! Love your sense of humor too, e.g., "We know enough to keep you busy catching up for a while." Indeed!

"We know more than enough to keep you busy catching up for a while"
That's how I feel! There's way to much to catch up on, the world's been there for who knows how long, the people for thousands of years and I for less than two decades
If our knowledge keeps expanding, how can we ever keep up? Well, that's why we have specialization... but that means you have to choose what to learn and what to leave for other people, aaaah

I came here from the astronomy playlist, because I want to learn EVERYTHING

EVERYTHING.

If I want to learn about space in my entirety, I have to work my way up the knowledge ladder.

Professor Dave, I will be watching more of your videos. Your speech is very clear, and you are very articulate. I do not understand physic much, but with the introduction of your videos, I believe I am on the right path now.
