One of the biggest stories of the 2021 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix weekend came when it emerged that Aston Martin wanted talks with F1's rulemakers over the potential to change the aero tweaks that were made to the cars for 2021 - with team boss Otmar Szafnauer even declining to rule out legal action if necessary. It seemed a strange claim to make, and was described as 'naive' by Red Bull's Christian Horner. So where did it come from, and how does Aston Martin feel now it's had those talks it was pushing for? Scott Mitchell explains what appeared to be behind such a strange story.

I swear, the DTS guys on Netflix are having the best weeks of their lives right now.

The most ironic part is that they had a high-rake car until they abandoned their own concept in favor of copying another team. They made their bed, now they have to lie in it.

Otmar's moaning was so pathetic when talking to Ted Kravitz in Bahrain that I almost got my violin out!

Saw this the other day: When you copy Mercedes’ homework and don’t know how they got their answers

Would love the FIA to say to daddy Stroll "Well maybe if you designed your own car instead of copying another you wouldn't be in this predicament"

Mercedes: Works their ass off to improve their car
Aston Martin: Complains their ass off to the FIA

In the words of Otmar himself: they just didn’t do a good enough job over the winter 😉

When you buy a car and then the rules change, you won't know how to modify it to keep it working well.

Aston Martin wanting the rules changed, unheard of

seb's season so far has been horrible, he has had problems from testing onwards, i hope for the best for him and for the team

Wait, so the changes that were expected to hit the high rake cars the most, but actually hit the low rake cars the most were designed to hit the low rake cars harder from the beginning according to him?

Aston Martin - Copies Mercedes 2020 designs without noting how they arrived there
2021 - Mercedes adapts to new rules, Aston Martin left with copied homework with no workings shown

Its not the first time we're seeing Otmar and Andrew Green crying over something and definitely is not the last

Basically Stroll sr. was already licking his chops at the thought he would beat Ferrari after having acquired a controlling stake in Aston Martin and buying a replica of Mercedes's F1 car last year. Unfortunately for him with the regulation change it back fired and now he's pissed.

Last year, I had worries of 'Jaguar vibes' when RP was being called Aston Martin, and Seb moving there like when Irvine moved to Jag. I do give props to the replies telling me not to think that but... man it's unfolding pretty badly in just 2 races.

Aston Martin: The new regulations have made us uncompetitive and something needs to be done.

The Internet: Aww let me play you a song from the world's smallest violin.

i don't understand why aston is so stressed about the 2021 rules when a whole new set of regs is coming next year with completely different cars.
