Total Football explained.

It’s probably fair to say that no style of football has had as much influence on the modern game as Total Football. From Jack Reynolds and Rinus Michels, to Pep Guardiola and Marcelo Bielsa, we take a look at the history and evolution of one of football's most famous philosophies.

Johan Cruyff is probably the most influential and revolutionary figure in football history. He’s literally the father of modern football

A breakdown of LVG's famous Ajax team in 1995, would be great. As Bielsa himself said that Ajax team had reached footballing utopia. Great Work as always!

These videos are awesome. The best thing a manager can do is recognize players’ true positions and natural tactical talents instead of forcing one style of play.

Last year under Peter Bosz you could see some of the elements of total football restored again in Ajax. A clear example which can serve as an illustration would be switching often from 4-3-3 to 3-4-3 when in possession (as was explaining in the video, with the libero stepping up into midfield). This was achieved either by one of the back four stepping up into midfield or both full backs stepping up and the defensive midfielder/deep lying playmaker (Lasse Schöne in this case) dropping deep to form a back three with the centre backs. It was a really interesting to see Lasse Schöne who had been playing as a winger or a CAM in previous years to pass the ball around with the centre backs looking for a pass forward to start an attack. Schöne had some problems if the opposition pushed aggressively, but against more defensive opponents it worked very well, suddenly providing the back three with a great range of passing and creativity to build up from the back.

Anyway, great vid! Thanks from (as you might suspect from this post) the Netherlands and an Ajax fan!

Great video. You can write a book on total football as a tactic and its history, but this was a good intro. Defenders were indeed not minding traditional defending, Michels and Cruijff preferred to think of the 'total' team defending without ball (the striker is the first to press, all will follow accordingly), or attacking as a whole. In the latter, it is explained why wingers were turned into backs by Michels and Cruijff (e.g. Krol was originally a winger) but also Van Gaal (Reiziger) and Bosz (Sinkgraven). They rely less on physical strength, more om technical prowess and tactical insight. Ronald Koeman is also an example, like Guardiola, both utilized as upcoming centrebacks by Cruijff. These players would have no stress like other defenders being pressed, since they were used to it as midfielders, is one of the things Cruijff thought. They could find solutions forward, play the ball deep, in contrast to defenders being primarily stoppers. It really is amazing to read about football tactics in earlier years and literally see the parallels and influence in modern day football.

Don’t forget that Feyenoord was coached by Ernst Happel from Austria ( 1969-1973) who was raised during the heydays of the Wunderteam. He took this approach with him, influencing the development towards this style of play.

The role of Xabi Alonso (Liverpool/Madrid/Spain)

I really feel deep-lying playmakers and defensive midfielders are generally overlooked on every channel here at YouTube. Please fix that.

Johan Cruyff almost implemented 3-4-3 diamond for the Barcelona side of the early 90s known as the Dream Team, where the defensive midfielder in the diamond would almost drop back into the defence to spray passes and while the two center midfielders would cover the wings as they would not have had any wingbacks
