This song isn’t about being or falling in love or even about sex. This song is a retelling of a veterans sorrow. He shot and killed a man who had his hands up in surrender in front of a woman. It is a war crime to kill someone who has surrendered. He wears that shame on him forever like a tattoo. It’s a beautiful song nonetheless, just brings a different feeling when you know what it’s about.

This is what Sade said about this song’s meaning in a 1993 issue of the San Diego Tribune; “Like A Tattoo was a song I wanted to write for a long time. I was in an Irish bar in New York years ago and this man came and sat next to me and started telling me things about himself that I didn’t particularly want to know. He had been in Vietnam. It’s my translation of what he was saying to me.”
