Should the West Work with China on Climate Change?

Should the West work with China on climate change? China is one of the biggest emitters of carbon in the world, but engaging with China on this front hasn't proven very productive. China is still building coal-fired power plants as it seeks to portray itself as a "developing nation" deserving of unequal treatment in climate accords. "We treat them like a liberal democracy when they're really just North Korea with better PR," says Unscripted's Shelley Zhang. If China is going to ignore the promises it makes anyways, is it worth engaging with? We discuss that and more in this episode of China Unscripted.

The Gold mining will most likely involve arsenic. And the Chinese aren’t know for their environmental concerns.

Working with the CCP on climate change is like working with a demolitions expert to renovate an ancient temple with extreme delicacy: always leads to disaster

Look at the Paris accords. It didn't do anything to cut China's role on the issue and just focus on the U.S. I won't at least be bothered by the accords if we didn't give China the pass while we paid Billions to Europe.

We did a lot of environmental bad like this in the US. We created a lot of dams for hydro power and built aqueducts to move water to places like LA. We had huge industrial pockets that put out a lot of pollution and that have mostly atrophied over the years like Detroit. This isn't unique to China.

Here’s the problem with trying to work with China on their carbon admitting industries. The vast majority of it is going to come from construction, and that is wholly internal and is the only thing floating the economy… Which in turn is the only thing keeping the CCP in power.

Until China gets a sustainable economic model, I’m not sure we can even if we wanted to.
