On April 4, 2023, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Viga, Philippines. The quake's epicenter was 120 km east of Viga and 45 km deep, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.3, and the citizen-seismograph network of Raspberry Shake at magnitude 6.2 as well.
The Philippines is in a region of high seismic activity, known as the "Ring of Fire." Despite efforts to minimize damage through earthquake preparedness, earthquakes still pose a significant threat to the country.
